Bunions & Bunion Treatment

What are Bunions?

Bunions are a foot deformity caused by an underlying structural problem. Changes in your big toe joint create a large bony bump and cause your big toe to deviate side-ways instead of straight ahead. The joint becomes enlarged, less mobile and may even become painful.

A common misconception is that bunions are only a problem for older women. But bunions can be seen in children as young as 6 or 7 years old and they are also common for men.

Children are more likely to develop bunions if they have crescent shaped or banana feet (Metartarsus adductus) or if they have flat feet (Metatarsus primus varus). Family history is also a strong indicator for the development of bunions.
